Roy is a resident of Stonehaven, brought up in the town and has lived in the NE of Scotland for almost all of his 55 years.
By Vocation is one of the Instructors / Tug Pilots at Deeside gliding club in Aboyne.
When not nailed into a Tug or instructing he’s quite a competitive glider pilot with some extremely long, high and fast glider flights around Scotland. (several flights over 750 km, frequently flying above 20,000’) His bad taste in shirts is offset by his good taste when shaping steel.
All of the sculptures are fabricated from recycled steel. All of this is formed in his garage at home in Stonehaven.
Roy has been flying since he was 18, 16 years flying Hanggliders then 20+ years flying Sailplanes, most of his sculptures are related in some way to aviation.
The love of flying is aided and abetted by a real affinity for the range of finishes that can be had on steel in its many forms. From the polished silver of stainless steel to the blue hues found in the mill scale on cold rolled mild steel.
